Where an employer provides portable fire extinguishers for employee use, 29 CFR 1910.157(g)(1) requires an educational program covering the general principles of extinguisher use and the hazards of incipient stage fire fighting. An employer whose emergency action plan requires total evacuation, and who does not intend employees to use extinguishers, can fall outside that paragraph.
How often is fire extinguisher training required?
Upon initial employment and at least annually thereafter, under 29 CFR 1910.157(g)(2). Employees designated to use fire-fighting equipment under the emergency action plan are covered separately by 1910.157(g)(4), also at least annually.
Does OSHA require hands-on fire extinguisher training?
It depends which paragraph applies to the employee. 1910.157(g)(1) asks for an educational program, which this course delivers. 1910.157(g)(3) covers employees specifically designated to use fire-fighting equipment as part of the emergency action plan and requires training in the use of the appropriate equipment, including any hands-on element, which the employer must provide.

Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep. It is a widely used industry memory aid rather than a term from the regulation, and it only applies after the more important decision has been made: whether the fire is still in the incipient stage and whether attempting to fight it is safe at all.
